How to use it

  1. Keep the sheet by your bed with a pen.
  2. Each evening, write 3 things that went well today, big or small.
  3. Next to each, a few words on why it happened.
  4. At the end of the week, read the 7 days back and fill in the look back.

Why 3 things, and why “why”?

The template follows the 3 good things exercise from positive psychology. Writing down why something went well makes you notice your own part in good days, and keeps the list from turning into the same 3 things every night. Stuck? Use one of our 60 gratitude prompts.

Questions

Is the template free?

Yes. Print it as often as you like, for yourself, your family or a class.

What size is it?

A4. It also prints fine on US Letter if you choose “fit to page” in the print window.

How long should I use it?

Try one week first. In the original study, people who kept going after the first week got the most out of it.

Can I do this without paper?

Yes. Our free daily email asks the same question each evening; you reply, and your answers are kept in a private journal.
